Pak-US relations that apparently ran smoothly from September 2001 till 2005 developed hiccups in 2006 and ever since the relations have been uneasy. Award of civil nuclear deal together with inking of several defence contracts with India and its efforts to make India a key player in Afghanistan exposed US pronounced tilt towards India. It was natural for Pakistan to feel let down. The US secret designs against Pakistan and negative role of India played a big role in widening the trust deficit. Both the US and India worked on an engineered program to harm Pakistan under the garb of friendship. With no troops and no responsibility, it suited India to keep expanding its influence in Afghanistan and in Central Asia and at the same time harming Pakistan through covert war without having to face hazards of guerrilla war.

Pak-US relations have seen many ups and downs starting early 1950s when Pakistan decided to join western pacts and became a US ally.

ISI-CIA cooperated with each other throughout the war against Soviet forces in Afghanistan in 1980s. The latter never felt offended on being kept in the backseat concerning planning; coordination, training, equipping and launching of Mujahideen were concerned. The US provided intelligence, funds, arms and fighters from other Muslim countries only. The ISI was eulogised and given due credit for the successful conclusion of the war. Its stature grew so high that it was seen as the most potent and effective spy machine in the region and second to none. After 1990, when the US hastily abandoned Pakistan and consequently Pak-US relations got strained, ISI also came in bad books of the US and ignited CIA-ISI cold war. During the two short tenures of PPP, an effort was made to shorten the long arm of the ISI.

The murders committed by Raymond Davis on 27 January 2011 in Lahore were a pre-planned task. The killer was acting according to its script. The main aim, to be achieved through the ruthless killings, is highly sinister and is a part of the wider US design against Pakistan. It is a dire warning to the country’s policymakers.

CIA contractor Raymond Davis was released by Punjab officials after a reported deal was negotiated with the families of the two men he was accused of murdering. Davis was scheduled to be indicted for murder charges today. Security forces picked up the families last night.

The events of November 26th, 2008 will forever live in infamy. The terror attacks perpetrated against the Indian city of Mumbai shook the South Asia subcontinent to its core, leaving 195 confirmed dead and at least 295 other innocents wounded (1). The terror was said to be manufactured in Pakistan, the self-declared enemy of India, “the world’s largest democracy.” It was carried out by expertly trained “Jihadi terrorists” as per the direction of Pakistani intelligence and elements within the Pakistani government. This delusional fallacy however, is devoid of any basis in reality and nothing more than a concoction of the vitriol-spewing institution known as the mainstream media.

The standoff between the United States and Pakistan over the arrest of contractor Raymond Davis is not going to be solved unless both nations take a step into that "no man's land" of trust and honesty. There is no question about diplomatic status, this was a clumsy mistake made by State Department officials in Washington who had little or no understanding of the legal and political issues at stake. Recent admissions that Davis is "CIA" mean nothing. Nobody knows what "CIA" means anymore, not since the wave of privatization that has spread to many of America's critical security functions.
