Make no mistake about this, imposing a No-Fly zone in Libya is an act of war entailing sustained military action as we are already witnessing. So now we have an illegal war and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan joined to an illegal war and most probably an eventual occupation of Libya ~ where an impatient and greedy BP is already getting ready to drill for oil off the Libya coast.

I wonder if the president has considered the fact that Cheney just might be trying to get him to make the same kind of mistake in Afghanistan that the Bush Administration made in Iraq in order to take the Iraq issue off the table for the 2012 election? If during the 2012 campaign America is bogged down in Afghanistan with the useless death of thousands of U.S. troops, all of a sudden, Bush, Cheney, and the GOP won't look all that bad. The president should think about that possibility, since the mechinations of Dick Cheney makes Machiavelli look like a trainee.

Since Saturday night, the United States, France, and Britain have been bombing Libya with cruise missiles, B-2 stealth bombers, F-16 and F-15 fighter jets, and Harrier attack jets. There is no reliable estimate of the number of civilians killed. The U.S. has taken the lead in the punishing bombing campaign to carry out United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973.

Muammar Gaddafi went on radio few days ago,threatening no mercy for the pro-democracy residence of Benghazi . In the last few days, Muammar and his son Seif El-Islam feel energized again after making some gains on the grounds during the last 10 days. Thanks to President Sarkozy and France, the UN Security Council passed a resolution calling for a “No Fly Zone” and taking a measures to protect the lives of civilians in Libya. Though the Obama Administration was too keen on the no fly zone, for reasons that became clear it took a back seat, with a wait and see attitude, until Gaddafi was able to win the battle against his own people with ready and final assault on the city of Benghazi. France persistence finally paid off, finally the Obama Administration was allowed to vote on the USSC resolution 1973. It is too late for all those killed and murdered by Gaddafi, and the hope that his days as leader of Libya are numbered.

Libya with its huge reserve and flow of vital oil to Europe & the United States could not and should not be left alone in the hands of some maniac and political outcast like Gaddafi to be drifted into some civil war that only god knows when it will come to an end. This is unacceptable under any circumstances, be it a popular uprising or not so popular, the crucial thing is that this no-fly zone must stop this no-flow of oil from Libya to Europe and USA, a situation that if kept going could drag a newly recovered western economy back to recession.

I have no brief for Libya's government, and it doesn't seem to make much sense at this point to debate whether or not the military action now taking place against it is, or is not, justified. It is a fact, and like the earlier onslaughts against Yugoslavia (read: Serbia) and Iraq, it'll simply play itself out, putting a gross imbalance of military power favoring the attackers against whatever intransigence and resistance Libya's government can muster, accompanied by pious and pompous speeches from Washington, London and other capitals of the attackers. As for Muammar Gaddafi, he is certainly certifiable, probably somewhere in the middle range of global dictators and close to the mayor-elect of Chicago, so if his psychosis is a basis for external military intervention, we had all better be prepared for a lot of military interventions in different parts of the world, perhaps starting with Chicago....

Twenty-eight nations have cooperated with the U.S. to detain in their prisons, and sometimes to interrogate and torture, suspects arrested as part of the U.S. “War on Terror.” The complicit countries have kept suspects in prisons ranging from public interior ministry buildings to “safe house” villas in downtown urban areas to obscure prisons in forests to “black” sites to which the International Committee of the Red Cross(ICRC) has been denied access.

While the Constitution’s Article I, Section 8, invests Congress with the power “to declare War,” the law school dean points out this has been largely ignored since President Harry Truman in 1950 “de facto changed the Constitution so that not the Congress, but the President, and he alone, makes the decision on war.”

In Viet Nam, for example, U.S. leaders caused the deaths of thousands of their own men and several million Vietnamese after they already knew they had made probably the worst mistake in American history. Velvel writes, “Our top military men create(d) free fire zones where civilians are killed on sight, and bomb and defoliate to the nth degree.” In Iraq, our leaders unleashed “a horrendous reign of terror from the skies, create a thus far thoroughly destabilized post-war society, and then, when all their other myths have shown to be myths, retroactively justify the war by saying that we got rid of an admittedly horrible dictator, his equally horrible sons, and his entirely horrible government.”

Since World War Two, an indisputably necessary conflict, Velvel points out the U.S. has fought the Korean War, the Viet Nam War, secret wars in Laos and Cambodia, the First Gulf War, Afghanistan, and the Second Gulf War in Iraq. It has also invaded, bombed or “quarantined” Panama, Grenada, Cuba, Haiti, Somalia, the Sudan, Bosnia, Kosovo, Serbia and Libya, and has “declared” a global war on terrorists.
