AN AMERICAN AND WORLDWIDE DISEASE

By Gordon Duff STAFF WRITER

“Mythography,” the term used for the sanitized “history” taught in schools around the world is one familiar to few.  With the advent of worldwide access to television and the internet, a mix of “unedited” history and conspiracy theory, some valid, some “harebrained” has spiced up our knowledge base.

Lying to kids about history has been an American tradition.  Our education system, long seen as one of the worst in the industrialized world, has always failed its kids, but the problem isn’t only American.  Japanese children are taught a version of history that fictionalized their role in World War 2.  To them, we started the war with Hiroshima and they won.

The French are taught almost nothing about their collaboration with the Germans in World War 2 or the role of America in freeing France from Nazi oppression.  Thus, the many memorials to American sacrifice in France, more than even in America, are seldom visited and even purposefully isolated.  If you want to honor America’s dead, bring a GPS and 4 wheel drive.

Nearly every country, out of a combination of pride or guilt, lies to its citizens.  Years from now, “black site” prison camps and our program of torture and prisoner abuse will be forgotten and erased as was the massive US support of Nazi causes prior to World War 2 or the funding of Stalin’s Russia by Wall Street in the 20’s and 30’s.

Simply put, if history doesn’t fit into the current rhetoric of the times, it is thrown away.

Cable television, with expanded channels on history, has stimulated research and operates free of the constraints of universities that depend of their funding by not offending politicians.  The Military History Channel’s Secret History of World War 2 systematically destroys, with well documented works, almost everything Americans have been told about that war.

Similarly, we are bombarded with programmes debunking established history, be it the American Legion participation in the attempted coup against the US government or the Warren Commission report on the assassination of John Kennedy.

In 1975, Congress found the Warren Commission findings inaccurate and determined that President Kennedy was murdered as part of a conspiracy.  Still, many cling to the discredited Warren Report, though no it is no longer the official finding.

Few Americans believe the Warren Commission as it has been debunked in highly credible documentaries for years but many Americans cling to it out of some unknown need.

Most American’s believe in UFO’s and almost all respected scientists believe “we are not alone.”  We are still involved in a massive coverup of the “Roswell incident” of 1947 although the governments of Britain, Russia, Mexico and many other countries openly admit holding proof of UFO’s and have long declassified and released these documents.

We, in the US, still continue to obfuscate as though our world will crumble if we learn UFOs exist or that President Bush may or may not have flunked a drug test or that Lee Harvey Oswald couldn’t have murdered President Kennedy with a broken rifle while at a vending machine 3 floors below the window he was supposedly at.

Currently millions of Americans, with no proof, believe their president was born in Kenya and is serving illegally.  However, lies being such as they are, and history being such as it is, he could well have been born in Kenya.  Money buys truth.  If money says he was born in Hawaii, he will have been born in Hawaii.  Live with it.

Back to our discussion of UFO’s….in October 1973, I was at Wurtsmith AFB in Michigan.  There was a famous UFO “flyover” at that time which I witnessed.  It was dusk, and a huge green and orange “something” came thru the clouds at high speed over the rows of parked B-52s.  We estimated its length at over 300 feet and speed at near Mach 1.  It quickly disappeared from sight after scaring half the base to death.

Today, when reading the official report, the incident happened in 1975.

When reading the “conspiracy theory” report, the “craft” landed on the runway.

When reading the police report on the incident, it was a “weather balloon.”

Our most popular TV shows often involve mysterious phenomenon and the supernatural but many Americans ascribe to a belief system that makes any event of “fringe science,” which to many can even be evolution or “relativity” an affront to their religious beliefs.

Thus, I have spent years listening to young French Communists tell me that D-Day never happened (the  US Military Cemetery above Omaha Beach must be a dream) or have been told by members of “veterans organizations” that President Eisenhower personally killed Adolf Hitler.

Lying about history can be done out of a need to control a populace that a government believes it can’t trust.

The history of the Catholic Church has been little but this for 2000 years, as Catholics know so much better than anyone.

Denial is generally out of fear.  People fear accepting life in a world filled with unknowns where leaders and heroes arer only humans, and sometimes deeply flawed ones at that.

Americans hold onto Washington and Lincoln, not perfect people, but great by any standards.  The British held onto Churchill during the war but voted him out of office the second Hitler died.

Many of us grew up loving JFK but live in a world where children are now taught to revile someone we loved so much in our own youth.

Americans have always hated the idea of propaganda.  Lying can never be honorable.  Is denying truth, even out of fear or religious belief, a form of lying?

Here at home, we have a 20 billion dollar a year public relations industry.  It writes our history, influences TV shows, edits the internet and, too often, rewrites history books.

PR, public relations, is the voice of special interest.  Special interest is, almost invariably, power to change expressed  by those holding excess liquid wealth that usually operates outside any honorable or patriotic base.  Truth is sold like cigarettes or defective drugs, meaning, “sold” truth is simply not truth.

A PR agent is, essentially, a “crooked lawyer” who uses legal technicalities to get mob bosses off the hook or set drug dealers free.

Yet, much of what we hear, and read comes from these “pimps” who write our news, control TV, and edit our history for their clients.

Their clients can be lawyers, labor unions or teachers but are more often insurance companies, big oil, arms manufacturers or business associations.

What it has given us is a world of information, information nearly always impure, information almost always stained by greed, lies and the touch of power.

No drug addict would buy bad cocaine, meth or heroin over and over but millions of Americans listen to the same lies over and over and never tire of it.

Denial is an addiction, perhaps the worst one.  Addiction to lies, the need for that “fix” is as dangerous to America as any drug addiction.

Any person who goes to a website, radio show, newspaper or TV broadcast and later learns what they have been told as fact is, in actuality a lie and returns to the same source for more is an addict.

You know who you are.

You know why you need that fix, even though you know how bad it is for you, for America, for your children.

Can addiction to lies, addiction to fear and hate be as strong as addiction to cigarettes and alcohol? There is no way for me to judge it.  I have friends addicted to all of these and more.

We outlaw drugs, we try to control cigarettes and alcohol, we certainly tax them to death.  Can we control lies?  Should be tax propaganda?

Would the national debt disappear overnight?

Perhaps.
