Local members of the Military Families Speak Out, an organization of military families against the war, paid tribute to the troops who have lost their lives in Iraq by holding a funeral procession through Seal Beach and Long Beach this afternoon.
The event came six days before the sixth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, where at least 4,259 U.S. troops have died, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.
The procession began at the parking lot of McGaugh Elementary School in Seal Beach with about 25 vehicles. Each vehicle had one poster with a word taped to its side; together, the vehicles spelled out "How many more?" and "End the war now," said Pat Alviso, the coordinator of the organization’s California chapters. Her son has served twice in Iraq and is currently serving in Afghanistan.
Two of the vehicles leading the convoy carried coffins wrapped with an American and an Iraqi flag. A truck at the end of the convoy had a papier-mache soldier missing an arm and a leg.
The convoy drove past the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station, the Veterans Administration and Sunnyside Cemetery in Long Beach, where it made a short stop, Alviso said.
"We had Vietnam vets reading poetry and an American flute player," she said.
Then the convoy left the cemetery, passed an Army recruiting station at 6th and Pine streets and ended at Democratic Rep. Laura Richardson’s office downtown.
