Danna Carter was all smiles Friday as he talked about his impending move from an apartment to his own Merrillville home with his teenage son next month.
“I’m extremely excited. It’s so hard to believe,” said the 45-year-old veteran and recipient of the first house built through Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana and the Northwest Indiana Veterans Action Council under the Veterans Build program.
Carter joined fellow veterans, Habitat for Humanity and veterans action council officials and others at the second Veterans Build breakfast at St. Elijah Serbian Hall, where speakers told of the need for both monetary donations and for veterans to apply for the second house to be built under the program.
“Veterans are very humble. In my experience, they often don’t want help,” said Mary Morstadt, co-chair of the Veterans Build committee with the Northwest Indiana Veterans Action Council.
She said with Carter, for example, it was his mother who urged him to apply.
“I think I’m blessed,” said Carter, who thought getting the Habitat house would be like trying to win the lottery.

Carter, who is disabled and walks with a cane, will be moving into a three-bedroom, one-bath ranch home in the 5900 block of Roosevelt Street in Merrillville. He served in both Desert Shield and Desert Storm and also suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.
