Veterans living in rural parts of New Mexico now have better access to services and programs available to them, thanks to a sizable federal grant that helped create five new outreach offices.
The New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services has opened Rural Veterans Coordination Program offices to help veterans with disability compensation, pension claims, health care and dependent/survivor benefits.
There’s even a new toll-free hotline – 800-672-7006 – where veterans can get their questions answered.
Although the offices’ focus is on identifying transitioning active-duty personnel and veterans who have recently left active duty, any veterans who have served will receive assistance, according to department officials.
The offices have opened in Albuquerque, Shiprock, Las Vegas, Santa Clara and Roswell.
The NMDVS is one of only five recipients nationwide of $2 million grants created by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Veterans Health Administration and the Office of Rural Health to assist rural-area veterans.
