In 2010, Brian Brandow, the author behind the personal finance blog Debt Discipline and member of the Finance Collective, found himself face to face with over $100,000 worth of debt. Knowing that he had to make a drastic change, he and his family created a budget and started detailing their journey to financial freedom on his blog. Now that Brian is completely debt free, we asked him to share a few tips on how he started on his path to become financially free and what he wish he had known at the beginning of his journey.

1. When did you realize that you needed to take control of your finances?

We had a rock-bottom moment when planning a family vacation in the summer of 2010. I realized we were out of cash and available credit.
