The recent decision to nearly double the pay of Greene County veterans service commissioners highlights a long-standing disparity among county veterans agencies, how they operate and how much they aid veterans.
Greene County commissioners recently approved the raises, which will boost pay for all five veterans service commissioners to $650 a month when they start their next terms. Commissioners are considering another increase, possibly next year, raising the monthly salaries to more than $900. Current monthly pay ranges from $341 to $369.
All 88 Ohio counties have a veterans service commission, appointed by county judges based on recommendations from veterans groups such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion. They meet at least once a month and are funded through property taxes. The offices help veterans with emergency assistance, and aids them in accessing state and federal benefits.
