Many consider gambling to be dangerous because of the unpredictable nature. There’s no such thing as a safe bet in sports as the favoured team who’ve been on an unbeaten run may lose their next match. The spin of a roulette wheel is a completely unknown beast and there are 37 different potential outcomes. There is no way to get an edge in roulette, as even the broken wheels that favour certain numbers are quickly replaced. Blackjack is completely different as it is possible to win and make a profit from the game. All it takes is some time spent to improve your blackjack knowledge, while there are still no guarantees, you can dramatically reduce the house edge and improve your own odds.
Basic Strategy
When playing blackjack the first thing to bear in mind is that the other players are not your opponents. No matter how many people are sat around the table, the only person you are playing against is the dealer. The basic rules are to get as close to 21 without going over and beating the dealer’s hand. Dealer’s have a set of rules, that are slightly different to the players rules, that they must abide by. Dealers will never double, split or surrender and all other players win if the dealer busts.
Where To Sit
Technically speaking, there’s no real advantage to your game based on your seating position. However, if you’re new to the game or not feeling as confident, you may choose to sit in the latter seats (clockwise further away from the dealer) purely to give you more thinking time. As the dealer deals clockwise, he’ll go to the player in seat one first for their decision (whether to hit or stand) and this can be rather daunting. Sitting further along the line gives you more time to assess your cards before making your decision. You shouldn’t spend too much time though, blackjack is a game of quick decisions that you’ll become more confident with the more you play.
Card Counting
Another way of dramatically improving your chances in blackjack is by counting cards. It is worth noting that counting cards is by no way easy, otherwise everybody would be doing it, but it can dramatically improve your odds and help you make a tidy profit. Card counting involves making a mental note of every card that has been played and enables you to predict the likelihood of cards that are coming up. Counting cards is not illegal, but it is highly frowned upon and in some cases, casinos have asked players to leave the premises, even Derren Brown has been banned from casinos. If you are going to count cards, it is important not to arouse suspicion and to walk away after a big win.
