“Syria’s new constitution will be ratified within next six months,” the Arabic-language Al-Watan newspaper quoted Sheikh Hassoun as saying on Monday.
He, meantime, reiterated that the western countries’ call for supervising the upcoming elections and a referendum under the auspices of the UN is aimed at creating rift among Syrians.
Sheikh Hassoun’s remarks come as Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has on different occasions underlined he sees no redlines for holding elections in his country on the condition that the Syrian people will choose to do so.
Earlier this month, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian underlined the Syrian people’s right to decide their own fate, and said combatant President Bashar al-Assad is also entitled to file candidacy for elections.
“It is the right of any competent person, including Bashar Assad, to become a candidate at the end of the political process; but it is the Syrian people who will decide,” Amir Abdollahian told FNA.
He, meantime, underlined that starting the political process in Syria depends on the establishment of truce in the country, and added, “The political process in Syria will not yield results without serious and effective fight against terrorism.”
“In Syria’s political process, the constitution which is put into referendum is the main criteria,” Amir Abdollahian said.
