The Disabled American Veterans of the Permian Basin, based out of Midland, presented a check of $1,000 to the Women Veterans Health Program at the VA Medical Center located in Big Spring.
“The Disabled American Veterans organization was started in 1920 and their one mission was to help veterans, their families and the surviving children of those families,” said Paul Reed, Commander of the local DAV, Chapter 58, at the brief ceremony on Monday. “With that tradition, on behalf of the Disabled American Veterans of the Permian Basin, I want to present this check to the female veterans program at the Big Spring VA for $1,000.”
Reed presented the check to Director of the West Texas VA Health Care System Michael Kiefer and Cynthia Schaffner, Manager of the Women Veterans Health Program of the West Texas VA.
This money will go toward the various benefits the Women Veterans Health Program offers, such as the Little Heroes program, or Maternity Benefit Package. This benefit allows eligible female veterans to receive maternity care within 50 miles of where they live with a community provider. It also covers the the cost of the entire pregnancy up to post-delivery visit and the first seven days of the newborn’s life.
