According to the Ohio Department of Taxation, school items will be exempt from sales taxes, including:
• Clothing priced at $75 per item or less;
• School supplies priced at $20 per item or less; and
• School instructional material priced at $20 per item or less.
Ohio’s tax holiday started yesterday and ends at 11:59 p.m. tomorrow.
Where did the idea of a tax holiday come from? In 1980, Ohio and Michigan implemented the first one to help boost automobile sales.
There are 16 states providing a tax holiday, primarily for back-to-school clothing, school supplies and electronics.
According to research, families, on average, are looking to spend close to $650 per child for elementary school fees, supplies and clothing.
