Partial Counts Noted

There is a change in the Radiation Count labeling this week.  The radiation labels now designate a site as: Partial Count only, or Gamma and Beta Radiation Combined Count. The Combined Count Total is a Higher radiation count than a Partial Count.

This arose because a Partial Reporting site was mistaken as a “Low CPM Site.” That is not necessarily the case. In this case it was not, the site was only reporting a Partial CPM Count. The relabeling is to correct the misunderstanding. The actual sources have not changed, just the labeling. Any fluctuation is a result of changing radioactive counts at the site.

Apparent High Counts

An apparently high radiation count may also be Partial Counts. In those cases, the missing Beta radiation counts would make the Combined Radiation counts higher. This becomes vitally important if you are considering moving to an area of even higher Combined Radiation than where you currently reside. In all cases, if you are using a Realtor® ask them what the Combined Beta and Gamma Radiation is AT the house or apartment, inside and outside.

If the Agent doesn’t know what you are talking about, they should. Consider firing them for poor preparation and move your business to another Agent. Perhaps someday, since all property is contaminated, this simple disclosure will be just another of the standard disclosures. It should be.

If you are not using a real estate broker with a radiation monitor, consider purchasing a good radiation monitor prior to your move. If that is not in the cards for you and you are “just hoping” for a better radiation outcome than in your current location, best wishes to you. There is nothing that beats actually knowing what amount of Combined Gamma and Beta Radiation at the house or apartment you are moving into.

Of course, there is always “Hope for the best;” sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

New Listing

On a different note, “Your Radiation This Week” welcomes Indianapolis, IN, to the list coming in with a smashing 449 CPM for a spot. Welcome Indianapolis, I hope you have better luck than the Portland class heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis (CA-35.) The cruiser was torpedoed July 30, 1945 by the I-58, a submarine of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The ship sank in 12 minutes in shark infested waters. [See Source #8 and story] The USS Indianapolis had just transported the first operational Atomic Bomb to Tinian from San Francisco in WWII.

Shorts and Longs

In the radiation biz, there are Rad Isotopes that decay in a short time and those that decay over a long time, many for truly majestic time periods – Billions of years, in fact. It all kind of depends on the numbers. There is no way to speed the radioactive decay up, or slow it down. As they say “It is what it is.”

So much for radiation. People are like that, too. Many people have died before their time because of radiation, they are the “Shorts.” Others have avoided some radiation and are the “Longs.” It’s just a quick handy shorthand to give you some idea of who is going to drop dead tomorrow of an unexpected heart attack. Be prepared, you can never predict this stuff.

How’s your ticker today? Cesium 137 is a relentless enemy of your heart. Remorseless, the Rad just bides its time.

After all, heart attacks are the leading cause of death from radiation. Creepy ‘cos it kinda sneaks up on a person and Zaps them with a Cesium 137 induced heart attack. In Your Radiation Weather today Cesium is the most abundant isotope by weight and Cesium is not all gone till 600 years pass, or 20 Half Lives, years from the time it was first created in a nuclear weapon or atomic reactor. This current Rad mess we find ourselves stuck with is not something we can wait out. The time for action is Now.

The radioactive particles in the air you will breathe today are too small for a filter to trap; however, the Rad particles usually attach to a piece of dust or pollen in the air and you can trap the dust or pollen. So, keep your HEPA filters running 24/7/365.  HEPA is an exacting engineering standard; not a particular brand.

If a filter meets the HEPA standard it will say so on the packaging and on the filter itself. They are very popular and come in freestanding models with replaceable HEPA Filters. The units are available from many manufacturers. This is something you can do to help clean your air today.
