About 13 more homeless veterans will be helped with housing thanks to $50,143 in assistance from the government.
The assistance is part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing, or HUD-VASH, program. The money provides about $320 a month to the veterans through the Battle Creek VA Medical Center and the Battle Creek Housing Commission. The state has received $1.6 million in rewards for the program, with $235,000 allotted to west Michigan.
The funds help support rental assistance with case management and clinical services provided by VA Medical Centers. The vouchers are based on an individual’s duration of homelessness and need for long-term support to maintain permanent housing.
Lee Talmage, executive director of the Housing Commission, said the money is part of a special voucher program for homeless veteran. The commission has received funding for the services since 2008. This is the seventh increment of the funding. Talmage said 173 vouchers have been used since they began receiving the government aid in 2008.
