With the rise of people booking short-term business trips and late deal holidays, many choose to pack hand luggage rather than paying for bags to be stowed in the hold. As well as avoiding the extra charges, this can be a much more convenient option. Having everything you need in one small suitcase or bag means you can beat the crowds of people hurrying to the baggage carousel on arrival.

There are some restrictions when it comes to packing items into your on-air luggage which we have outlined in four sections for you below.
- Electronics
Electronic devices are vital items for relieving boredom on flights, however, a lot of people worry that these are not permitted. Laptops, mobile phones, tablets, cameras and MP3 players are all permitted in hand luggage. You can also bring electrical appliances such as hair dryers, travel irons and electrical shavers.
Electronic devices must be switched off during take-off and landing, but they can be used while you are in the air if they are switched to flight mode.
- Medicines and chemicals
As long as you have documentation from a qualified medical professional, you can keep your medicines in your hand luggage. This includes tablets, capsules, inhalers, hypodermic syringes and screened liquids. If you need oxygen cylinders, you must contact your airline as different rules apply.
Chemicals and other toxic or explosive substances are not permitted in hand luggage. However, you can take one lighter on your person in a clear plastic, resealable bag.
- Liquids
Most of us know that liquids in your hand luggage need to be 100ml or less (at least, if you want to keep your check-in process smooth). However, in the rush, you may forget to research what is classified under this rule. Remember that as well as drinks and toiletries, it also applies to cosmetics, gels, pastes, sprays and semi-liquid foods. Exceptions include baby food, milk and sterilised water, however, these will need to be screened at security.
All liquids must be kept in a clear, plastic bag which can be resealed and shown at security. The bag must be approximately 20cm by 20cm, and its total volume of liquids should not exceed 1 litre.
- Sharp personal items
Packing for a short trip may leave you confused about whether you can pack personal items that could be seen as a risk to others. Small scissors (with blades no longer than 6 centimetres), nail clippers, tweezers and sewing needles are all permitted in hand luggage, as are razor blades if they have a fixed cartridge.
Our tips on what you can take in your hand luggage should lead you to a hassle-free check in. If you’re in doubt, we advise that you leave items at home or pack them into hold luggage. For more detailed information on government hand luggage restrictions, you can visit the UK’s official website.
