The second call in this series will discuss implementation of the Trauma Guide and positive employment outcomes for homeless female veterans
Homeless female veterans face many barriers in obtaining gainful employment. In fiscal year (FY) 2010, 77% of homeless female veterans were unemployed. Homeless Veterans Reintegration Programs (HVRPs) help homeless veterans access resources and receive training to enter the job market. Access to child care, PTSD and military sexual trauma (MST), skills translation and transportation are several obstacles that these veterans must face when trying to compete for jobs. Likewise, employment programs for women veterans face many challenges in providing these services.
On Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012, at 3:00 p.m. EDT, the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans TA Center will host a teleconference on homeless female veterans. “Positive Employment Outcomes for Homeless Female Veterans: Challenges, Tools, and Provider Perspective” will feature Lucia Bruce of the Department of Labor Women’s Bureau, Kathleen Guarino of the National Center on Family Homelessness (NCFH), John Rio with the National Veterans Technical Assistance Center, and service providers from the Goodwill Industries of Houston. The call will include a discussion of employment resources and challenges for homeless female veterans, how to implement the “Trauma-Informed Care for Women Veterans Experiencing Homelessness: A Guide for Service Providers,” as well as a service provider’s perspective on using trauma-informed care and leveraged resources to create positive employment outcomes.
This teleconference is the second in a series of calls addressing the needs of homeless female veterans. The first teleconference discussed the importance of integrating trauma-informed care into service delivery plans, the process for developing the Trauma Guide, and resources within the guide to address the psychological and mental health needs of women veterans. Materials and an audio recording of this call can be accessed here.
