Showing of the film “The Sound of the Violin At My Lai” with Director Tran Van Thuy followed by musical performance by Mike Boehm and the Mossman Family Band
Although the American people have been involved in humanitarian work in Vietnam since before the American War, the last 35 years have presented great challenges to help alleviate poverty and the lasting effects of that war. Among the many successes and failures of this work, perhaps the most crucial challenge, and the most abiding result, is strengthening the bond between the people of these two nations.
The public is invited to an evening of film, music, and discussion about humanitarian work here, highlighting that of Madison Quakers, Inc.—in particular the partnership of Mike Boehm and Phan Van Do who have worked for nearly 20 years in the central province of Quang Ngai, which includes the site of the Son My (My Lai) massacre. Critical to their work is a long-term, personal relationship with the people of the province, the Women’s Unions and government agencies that help direct the MQI micro-loan programs, and house and school construction.
In the evening’s program, documentary director Tran Van Thuy will show his award-winning film The Sound of the Violin at My Lai, which features the fiddle music and words of Boehm. This will be followed by discussion of ongoing humanitarian work by MQI and other NGOs in Vietnam, the challenges they face, and a look to the future. It will end with a musical performance by Boehm and the Mossman Family Band, who helped raise moral and monetary support for victims of Agent Orange in Vietnam through house concerts in the Midwestern U.S. They are currently in Vietnam to deliver these funds and share music, school children’s art, and friendship.
Donations for this continuing humanitarian work will be gratefully accepted.
