Don’t consider cutting veterans benefits

The day this nation can’t afford to take care of her veterans is the day this nation should quit creating them.

Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., introduced a plan to cut $4.5 billion from the Department of Veterans Affairs. She has called on Congress to freeze Department of Veterans Affairs health care spending and reduce disability compensation.

On her website, the congresswoman recommends the cuts as a way to offset Social Security disability insurance payments and says her plan is intended to generate discussion.

It is beyond belief that, while our nation is at war, someone would even think of forcing our wounded warriors to sacrifice even more than they already have. Our servicemen and women have suffered injuries and disabilities as a result of their service to the nation, and our nation must not shirk its responsibilities toward them. Who would think to tell a veteran who has lost a limb that he or she has not sacrificed enough?

Independent studies have shown the VA health care system provides safe, high-quality health care at an average cost that is less than Medicare, Medicaid or the private sector.

This ill-advised plan is totally out of step with America’s commitment to our veterans. Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander-in-Chief Richard Eubank put it best when he said, “The day this nation can’t afford to take care of her veterans is the day this nation should quit creating them.”

Every veteran should write the president, their member of Congress and every elected official to publicly reject Rep. Bachmann’s heartless proposal.
