EMPTY TALK ON IMMIGRATION REFORM AND BORDER CONTROL
By Gordon Duff STAFF WRITER/Senior Editor
Who wants America flooded with illegal aliens? Who wants our prisons full, our schools overcrowded and our hospital waiting rooms loaded with freeloaders? The answer is obvious. Call them what you will, conservatives, “the rich and powerful” or “big business,” our open border problem is a huge moneymaker for our real “freeloaders,” those who receive government largess and pay no taxes at all, America’s rich and infamous.
EXXON corporation didn’t pay a cent of taxes last year. Few corporations pay anything and most Americans who make over $5 million a year pay a smaller percentage of income tax than a food stamp recipient. Millions of Americans moved “offshore” years ago, like Halliburton did. Paying the bill for illegal aliens falls on the middle class, folks who don’t have “nannies” or gardeners or pool boys. Who is really raking it in?
The flood into the United States began in California during the reign of Governor Ronald Reagan. His backers, the corporate agriculture crowd from the Imperial Valley wanted to break the back of the United Farm Workers Union. To do that, they needed hundreds of thousands of poor Mexicans to flood across the border into California, workers who would work for pennies and be deported if they opened their mouths.
It has always been desirable for “conservatives” to have workers around who could never speak up. Illegal aliens are perfect. They get paid with cash, no social security to pay, no medicare, no workman’s comp, no unemployment compensation, no minimum wage. If you want to know who our borders are open, the advocates of our current and continuing farce of border protection are the US Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers. Both are, in effect, better known as the Republican Party.
Reagan’s game, meant to bring a few hundred thousand “wetbacks” to work as slave laborers in the fields of his rich backers instead brought in ten million. When California could no longer hold them, they flooded over the blue states, taking every hourly job in sight, food processing, agriculture, manufacturing. It wasn’t just the millions of jobs they took, for those working, wages spiraled down in every area, starting with construction. A Mexican roofer makes $3 bucks an hour, not $20. Go to Maine, to North Carolina, to Minnesota. Look at any job site. Every face will have the same look, Hispanic.
There is another side to this. The rhetoric about lazy minorities is a joke, especially to anyone who has run a business. Those decent “white people” who were always supposed to be so honest and hard working aren’t really around so much anymore. I know of entire counties where the “all white” population is a combination of drug dealers, drug users, SSI (Social Security Disability Insurance) recipients and convicted felons. The percentages are, in some cases, higher than those of the most blighted urban areas in the country.
Hiring workers in America, even in rural areas, once upon a time where the myth of the “honest and decent Christian (read “white”) American made his home, is now a nightmare. Ask any employer. First day, tools are missing. Second day, late, drunk or “no show.” Often as not, workers stay long enough to file for a back injury or “carpal tunnel” syndrome and a period of “worker’s comp” leading to a lifetime of Social Security.
We are spending billions a year to catch illegal aliens. Billions more is being spent developing technologies to identify people sneaking across open land. Think about this for a second. We could bury the Soviet Union, put men on the moon and we can’t build a few hundred miles of fence? Dozens of nations around the world protect extremely volatile borders, not just the United States. None of them spend a tenth the money we do.
Try getting from Spain to France, two countries inside the European Union. There isn’t even a fence at the border but just try crossing it. The French will show up, quite unexpectedly, and take a kind and polite look, not only at your passport but the trunk of your car as well. Try not stopping for them, see how it works out for you.
Are they telling us that we couldn’t take 30,000 troops from Iraq or, better yet, 50,000 from Afghanistan, and close the border overnight? If you ever wanted to stop someone, has anyone thought of using guns? I have been told shooting works quite well. We spend a trillion dollars a year on these things and yet, with our biggest threat our southern border, thousands of armed gangsters run right past our defenses every day?
We currently have up to 7,000 troops, Marines mostly, in Costa Rica, protecting them from Mexican drug gangs. Have we considered bringing them home to protect the United States?
Are politicians also part of the problem? With Bush era gaffes, two illegal wars, an economic collapse and the national IQ taking a 30 point drop, tarnishing the image of fear mongers and the manipulators that make up the oligarchy that runs America (sometimes I suspect for Israel) the issue of immigration is one of the few available to dupe the public.
The “war on terror” even when started out with a “bang” on 9/11, has become less than believable, even a “conspiracy theory.”
Without “Mexicans” to point fingers at, keep the Tea Party railing about, hard questions might get asked. We don’t want folks clamoring about where their money is or why there aren’t any jobs or, most of all, why a few people seem to get richer and richer the worse thing are for everyone else. That simply isn’t right. It isn’t even economics, it is more like organized crime.
Is this why we are hearing about illegal immigration?
Is this why we will never close our borders?
