The Military Order of the Purple Heart is pleased to recognize the Blinded Veterans Association and its Members on the 65th Anniversary of their founding on March 28, 1945, when 100 blinded World War II veterans at the Avon `Old Farms’ Army Convalescent Hospital in Connecticut joined together to form an association, dedicated to the special needs of blind veterans.
Since its inception, the Blinded Veterans Association has encouraged the blinded veterans it serves `to take their rightful place in the community with their fellow men and work with them toward the creation of a peaceful world’. It has continued to advocate for the war-blinded to regain independence, confidence, and self-esteem through rehabilitation and training.
The Blinded Veterans Association (BVA) is an organization of blinded veterans helping blinded veterans. Through its service programs, regional groups, resources, and advocacy before the legislative and executive branches of government, the BVA hopes to make life better for blinded veterans. The BVA provides all blinded veterans with encouragement and support. There is no charge for any BVA service and membership is not a prerequisite to obtain help. All legally blinded veterans are also eligible for BVA’s assistance whether they become blind during or after active duty military service.
The Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) is unique among Veteran Service Organizations in that all its members were wounded in combat. For this sacrifice, they were awarded the Purple Heart Medal. With grants from the MOPH Service Foundation, the MOPH and its Ladies Auxiliary promote Patriotism, Fraternalism, and the Preservation of America’s Military History. Most importantly, they provide comfort and assistance to all Veterans and their families, especially those requiring claims assistance with the VA, those who are homeless, and those requiring employment assistance. MOPH volunteers provide assistance to Hospitalized veterans at VA sites and State Veterans Homes.
