This web site often takes a decidedly anti-Israeli view of the world. Maybe the Israelis have earned it…maybe not. I leave that to you to decide. But I draw the line when Israelis are portrayed as some sort of monolithic and completely inhuman group of hand-rubbing gangsters out to dominate the Middle East and then the world with their “agenda”, which seems to vary from writer to writer. No one seems to be able to agree on what the Israeli agenda actually is.
Personally I think their agenda is quite simple. They want to survive.
But in today’s New York Times there is an article entitled For Israelis, Mixed Feelings on Aid Effort that shows a very human side of Israeli society. The Israeli right wing is so proud, and rightly so, of the Israeli government’s response to the needs of the crushed people of Haiti in delivering top class medical aid. The Israeli left wing is screaming to the government, “how about the Gazans? What are we doing for them?”
So, do you see now? They are hardly the fascist monsters that the world press so often seems to portray them as being. They are people. They are human beings struggling to balance their need to survive in a hostile local environment against their need to have a strong hand inside the world community spreading Jewish values of brotherhood and care to fellow human beings.
Thank you Israel for what you are doing in Haiti. Just as an aside, I think you need to listen to the left wingers over there. They have a point.
