In a must-read from Garrett Epps in Politics Daily entitled Beyond West Point: Congressional Authorization and Obama’s Afghanistan Surge we get a sense that President Obama is stretching the law to get his way in Afghanistan.
Even someone with no legal training such as me understands the danger in allowing the President to have unchecked war powers. This is a critical read for anyone who believes that democracy still lives in this republic.
Where is Congress on this matter? Why have there been no challenges to this "war powers" usage by the last two Presidents? How are the people represented in this "sole decider" situation relative to sending their sons and daughters to war? How did this debacle unfold?
If this is the case, why do we even need a Congress?
