louismakEach issue until their flight, the Hub will profile one of the 25 veterans planning to go on the Hero Flight to Washington, D.C., to visit the National World War II Memorial.

Age: 84

Hometown: Gothenburg

Service: U.S. Army from December 1945 to 1948. Deployed to Belgium and then to Germany. Duties included driving an M-7 tank and being a gunner. “We went from the Rhine River to the Ruhr River sleeping in our bags outside the tank at nights.” Spent time in Berlin, Frankfurt and Stuttgart.

 

     

Family: Wife, Helen Mak; son, Daniel of Alliance; daughter, Barbara Hicken of Gothenburg; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Occupation: Fertilizer truck driver for All Points Co-op of Gothenburg; owner of the Bowling Center in Gothenburg for 25 years; and former truck driver for Ruan Transport and Nebraska Salt and Grain.
