STAND-DOWN FOR HOMELESS VETERANS IN SEPTEMBER 2009

by George R. Smith

Our Soldiers are coming back from Iraq and are finding themselves out of work and with no place to live that they can afford.  I am sure that you are outraged that this could happen.  The United States Veterans Initiative or U.S. Vets, has been housing these Veterans and addressing their individual barriers to success since 1993.  We are the leader in providing services to our Veterans and house 2,100 Vets each night in 10 locations around the nation.

We connect them with the V.A. services for medical and mental health, provide individual counseling, workforce development, sobriety support, Legal services, Educational services and testing, Transportation, suits and clothes, we get them jobs quickly and then work on getting them a career.

We now have Veterans from Desert Storm, Operation Enduring freedom, and Operation Iraqi freedom. We ask that you help us help those who kept you and your family?s safe at night.

You can see for yourself the work that we do by going to: www.usvetsinc.org or by contacting: jnelson@comptoncity.org to see what you can do as an individual or an organization to make this the best Stand Down Event ever.

If you know a Veteran that need?s help let them know about us.  We will do whatever we can to assist them. Every year for the past 6 years we have held a stand down in our Compton site to allow Veterans from the area a safe place where they can get off the streets, shower, fed great food, be entertained, and given a safe place to sleep for three days. Most importantly we connect them with the services they need in order to change their lives by ending their cycle of homelessness.

The city of Compton California and Councilwoman Barbra Calhoun is instrumental in this Stand Down event and coordinates the location, manpower, supplies, and determination to do what they can to help the Nations forgotten Heroes.

Thank you for your support of our Nations Heroes in Their time of need.
