By Dr. John Humins STAFF WRITER

The reign of bush-the-lesser is ending.  It is truly the end of an error.  Two stolen elections.  Using 9/11 to justify erosion of constitutional rights. An unnecessary war in Iraq conducted under false pretenses and ever changing justifications. Torture.  Camp Delta.  Renditions. Warrantless wiretappings.  American citizens Imprisoned as enemy combatants.

Katrina. “You’re doing a helluva job Brownie.”  Thousands stranded for days while the emperor worked out daily in the White House gym. Trailer homes reeking formaldehyde.  Trucks with water and other supplies wandering the country.

We cannot forget the reduction of taxes for his base, those in the top wealth percentiles. Lowered income tax rates. Reduced capital gains taxes. Ending estate taxes, which are termed ‘death’ taxes to confuse the public. All this is done while the country is involved in his expensive misadventure in Iraq.  This is trickle down economics gone mad.

To compliment the tax give-aways, the bushie regime deregulated as much of the market place and Wall Street as it could to allow greater corporate profits and stockholder dividends.  Meanwhile, EPA and OSHA regulations were undermined or ignored.  The bushies, indeed, learned well from the Reaganites.

Indeed, the fat cats got fatter.  The oil companies are richer after a speculative bubble that reamed the public. Meanwhile, the defense contractors are wallowing in the largesse of non-competitive contracts, which favored many companies in the Bush family’s Carlyle Group.  And don’t forget the rich tidings for Cheney’s Halliburton consortium.

The end result of all of this chicanery is an economic meltdown that affects us all.  The solution to the meltdown was a bailout which is more like a handout to the fat cats whose uncontrolled greed created the economic mess in the first place.  Once again, bushie has served his political base well, while undermining the national welfare.

Political stooges wearing the garb of Republicans allowed this fool to be taken seriously.  Political stooges wearing Democrat garb were too compliant and mealy-mouthed.  I have lost trust in the Democrats and I eagerly await the advent of a real two party political system in this country.  The current Democrats are Republicans-lite.

I cannot rejoice the ascent of Barack Obama until the moron in the White House has departed to Texas, where it hoped that he will soon be visited by criminal investigations and prosecutions of his administration.  But this hollow dimwit will not suffer much knowing that he has successfully fulfilled his mandate to his base.

The endless wait for the end of this nightmare has been dispiriting and numbing.  But in just a handful of hours the ordeal will be over.   I have a cautious optimism about Obama.  Later today, I will rejoice and hope.  JH
