The U.S Military Draft – The Biggest Joke in U.S. History

boneless chickenUniversal Service was Never Universal

BY G. DUFF

Oldsters like to talk about things that they think they remember.  The good old days involved better cars that often didn’t start with tires that work out in a few miles and that turned corners at 5 miles per hour. Phony vets remember being soaked with spit by hippies who filled our airports for a decade.  There has never been a story of a group of vets beating "hippie spitters" beyond recognition, only stories about airport spitters, passed on by war heroes like Sylvester Stallone.

Another myth was universal military service.  Elvis served.  I served.  Many of us served.  National Guard and Reservists in the past didn’t serve.  Those organizations were custom designed for the lucky few or children of people with influence. College students didn’t serve.  The sick didn’t serve, even if, like Warlord Limbaugh, their disease was an ass pimple or sneezing attacks at the idea of missing a frat party.

Bill Clinton was a draft dodger.  George Bush was also as was Cheney.  Most politicians, almost all Republicans and the majority of Democrats were draft dodgers during wartime and service avoiders during peace. Ronald Reagan was a draft dodger as was John Wayne.  Bob Dole was a draft dodger who got caught during the final weeks of the war, was wounded and became the spokesmen for all veterans.  What a crock of bullshit he is.

Now we have a volunteer Army.  Seems like some volunteer and some are volunteered by our draft dodgers who won’t let anyone out of the military, no matter how long their enlistments are up so long as the kids of our politicians and the rich never have to fight in a war.

Some rich kids went to war.  One Bush and a couple of Kennedy’s for sure went.  John McCain went.  Dan Quayle didn’t.  Truth is, the majority of the children of war supporters kept their kids out of war.

To a large extent, Vietnam was fought, especially in the most elite units, by people who opposed the war, even while in Vietnam and to a greater extent afterward.  People who say different now are simply liars.  I know because I was there.  I know because I asked.  You  have alot of time on your hands between "burning shitters" and long range patrols.  We didn’t have one Marine in our unit that didn’t think the war was total bullshit and the Marine Corps was run by lifers with a need to stay as far from combat as possible.

From the front lines, things can be pretty clear.  If you were looking for war supporters, it could be pretty lonely.

I hear that that has changed now.  The new volunteer army, though being screwed around by both the Army and VA, are behind the Iraq war.  I know that they have had little but propaganda and lies since entering the military.  Our question is, are volunteers more likely to believe bullshit than those who served during "universal service?"

That is an question we will be looking at.
